John W. Martin IV
After eight years in “big law,” John founded Treebank Legal to deliver legal services more effectively. John grew up in South Carolina and enlisted in the Army after high school to join the Ranger Regiment. After serving three years with the Rangers, John earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from Clemson University. He joined the family business, Mar-Mac Wire, and spent nearly ten years implementing process improvements and managing various aspects of the business.
In legal practice, John has been a part of over 300 transactions ranging from $200,000 to $1.5 billion in enterprise value. Many of the sellers he encountered were not as prepared for a sale as they could have been. As a result, most sellers either left money on the table or retained some element of risk long after the transaction closed. Through Treebank Legal, John is helping future sellers mitigate risk and retain the full value of their business.
John has advised family businesses in a range of matters from corporate governance and commercial contracts to generational leadership transitions. John understands that family dynamics can strongly influence business operations, both positively and negatively. John has personally experienced life in a family businesses and is passionate about drawing on that experience to help families build strong businesses and retain strong family relationships.
What’s in the name?
In 1983, founder John Martin’s mother was pregnant with her third child. Thinking it was another boy, his parents granted naming rights to John and his brother. The brothers came up with “Herbert Sherbert Treebank Martin.” Thankfully, when his sister was born, mom and dad revoked naming rights. In 1984, John’s dad named his new venture “H.S. Treebank, Inc.” as a consolation prize for the brothers. Treebank Group LLC was founded 40 years, to the day, after H.S. Treebank, Inc. as a tribute to three generations of entrepreneurship. The three branches in our logo represent three generations and the top represents future growth.
